We’re all in this together as it appears that a new High School Musical film is in development at Disney+. In addition, it also looks like the former MVP of East High, Zac Efron, may make his return after 16 years since High School Musical 3.
According to The DisInsider, Disney is already working on the next film instalment of the series for Disney+ and want to bring back Efron, who played Troy Bolton, for it.
The last time Bolton was seen in the High School Musical franchise, he got accepted into the University of California to stay with Vanessa Hudgens‘ Gabriella while continuing his career in basketball and theatre.
Although Bolton and his friends eventually graduated, Disney decided to explore this universe most notably with its Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which featured the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.
Its final season, which was released in 2023, saw a fictionalized version of High School Musical 4 being made with the series’ cast playing extras all while dealing with the dread of transitioning into college.
It also saw the returns of original cast members Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, Monique Coleman, Alyson Reed, and Bart Johnson.
The High School Musical films became a staple of the 2000s-era Disney Channel, which were originally supposed to be movies for cable. However, it managed to find success and break records for the network with 7.7 million viewers in its first film’s release.
With this new film in development, should Efron make his return, it could potentially bring back the original cast for one more outing as East High welcomes them back as mentors.
More so, it also has the potential to bring back some of the stars from the Disney+ series.
Although this isn’t the first time that the High School Musical franchise has had a reunion special (which was released in 2016), this new film can certainly serve as the reunion that fully brings both casts, old and new, happily together at last.
